UNSW has provides an excellent program because it is directed through industry experience. You mix academic studies with site visits, you mix the technical aspects with theory and practice. Before I came here I’d already been in the construction industry for many years, as had a lot of my colleagues, so it was great to build relationships and get good industry exposure.
I was working on the construction of the largest shopping centre ever built in Colombia when I realised the need to continue my professional training. I looked all round the world for a Master of Construction Project Management program, and UNSW grabbed my attention because of its superior rankings. The good Australian weather was also a factor because in Colombia we don’t have winter!
I was lucky enough to receive international sponsorship from UNSW, so I quit my job and came to Australia. During my studies I also had the chance to work part time for a consultancy which provides services for sub contractors, so I’ve gained experience in negotiations, with contracts and quality management, providing and procuring materials, and also cost control.
I’ve received a few industry awards for my academic performance– the Program Director’s prize as well as awards from the Australian Institute of Building and the Chartered Institute of Building.
But the program has helped me in so many other ways. The developments are larger and more frequent here, and you get exposed to many different types of projects, especially in the commercial and industrial sectors. I have also learned a lot from Australian safety requirements – some of the best in the world – and from local procurement methods.
I’ve now received permanent residency and am looking forward to exploring the many opportunities that Australia provides in construction.
