This course has enabled me to look at environmental problems from different perspectives. I have studied impacts on the environment, but also special concerns like the economic and legal aspects, trying to find innovative ways to approach environmental problems and make sure we cover all bases.
I chose UNSW because it offered one of the most comprehensive environmental programs. Also, the entry was quite inclusive even though I didn’t have a science background: I have a fine arts degree and my post graduate is in teaching. In the end these are all complementary to my work on the environment, and it was relatively easy for me to catch up on the scientific background.
Now I’ve graduated I’m planning to apply for a graduate visa and use my qualifications to work in the area I have studied. There is a lot of potential for work in Australia: most councils here have sustainability officers or community programs geared to green initiatives.
I have enjoyed studying here because the lifestyle and people are very similar to Canada. You get along easily, the university is very relaxed, and you feel at home quite quickly. Also Australia’s location means you are exposed to more of an Asian influence, you get a different world view.
With an arts background, I am interested in the problem solving aspects of environmental management. I feel there is plenty of room for creativity looking at how we can do things better.
If we are going to take it seriously we need to change how we approach everything - it’s forcing us to think outside the box.
