Guidelines

1. All students wishing to undertake a period of full-time research or professional experience at UNSW of up to 12 months duration may apply to be enrolled in a special program called the Professional Practicum Program (Course 6007).

2. Acceptance for enrolment in the Professional Practicum Program is dependent upon the ability of the School concerned to offer suitable supervision.

3. Participants will be treated as non-award international students, making them eligible for a Student Visa. Please refer to your nearest Australian Consulate for further advice and information or the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs (DIMA).

4. Students who are already studying at UNSW as part of an award (degree-seeking), non-award (Study Abroad or Exchange) or recognised joint program containing a research component are not permitted to transfer to the practicum program for the research component.

5. The International Exchange Program is responsible for administering the Professional Practicum Program.

6. As Practicum students are enrolled in an overall course code as full-time research students and are therefore not enrolled in specific classes, they do not receive an official Academic Transcript from UNSW. However, they may request a Report or Reference from their Supervisor at the end of their practicum program to outline the work that was undertaken.

7. The School or Department is responsible for assessing the student's academic background and English language fluency and ensuring the student is able to participate meaningfully in the proposed research/professional practicum

8. The fee charged to Practicum Students consists of an application fee which is a fixed fee regardless of the period of enrolment, to cover the fixed costs of processing the applications and administrative support for students.

Students who wish to participate in UNSW Student organisations will need to contact the organisations directly for further information

9. Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)
Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is a compulsory condition of your student visa and must be paid before we can issue visa documentation. Students are required to maintain OSHC throughout their stay in Australia. Students who have been accepted into the Professional Practicum Program will be asked to purchase their own OSHC online from Worldcare, the University's preferred provider of OSHC.

Swedish or Norwegian students who have the following health cover do not need to take out OSHC
- The Swedish National Board of Student Aid (CSN) OR
- The National Office for Social Insurance Abroad -Norway (FFU)

All New Zealand citizens are covered by Australian Medicare.

Please note that overseas student health cover must be purchased from an approved provider. Health cover from your home country or university will not be accepted.

Application Procedures

  • The Student must first contact the School or Department he/she wants to work in and negotiate with a member of staff to supervise the proposed project.
  • The student completes the application form and returns it to the proposed School/Department.
  • The Supervisor, Head of School and Dean must approve and sign the application form and forward it to Sebastien Robin, at the International Exchange Program.
  • The International Exchange Program will arrange for processing and dispatch of Confirmation of Enrolment Form and Letter of Acceptance to the student with an acceptance package.
  • Students obtain their student visa prior to departure from their home country

Upon arrival to Australia, students must contact Sebastien Robin at the Exchange Office and arrange the payment of their Practicum Program fees.
