The UNSW Practicum Exchange Program is a prestigious, long standing program at UNSW, designed for students who wish to go on exchange to some of our world class partner institutions to obtain research experience or professional/industrial practice. This program is for a limited period (usually between two and six months) and may be included in your research work at UNSW.

The Practicum Exchange Program is based on a set of guidelines established to ensure that:

  • you remain enrolled at UNSW, and that tuition fees are waivered at the host institution
  • you are formally enrolled at the host institution and are able to obtain access to the library, student services, campus amenities and recreational facilities
  • you are appropriately covered by the University's workers' compensation and liability insurance if you are working in laboratories and other sites on campus
  • you can apply for a student visa from the destination country

For students wishing to undertake research at a non partner please refer to the How to Apply for research exchange section of our website for further information.

Period of enrolment

The duration of your visit is negotiated between you and your prospective supervisor at the host institution however you can enroll for as little as two weeks to a maximum of twelve months.

Fees

  • Tuition fees: As this is an exchange program the tuition fees are waived at the host institution. You will remain enrolled in your research program at UNSW.
  • UNSW administration fee: There are currently no admission fees for UNSW wishing to go on outbound practicum students in 2011.
  • Host Institution administration fee: An administration fee may be charged by your host institution. Check with your host institution for further details.

Living Costs

Like Student Exchange, planning your finances is important and you will need to demonstrate you have sufficient funds to undertake your Practicum Exchange. You should be able to demonstrate you have access to approximately AUD 2,200 for every month that you will be overseas.

Visa, Language and Academic Requirements

As a UNSW student, you can generally apply for a student visa through your host institution. Each country has different requirements and you should check the requirements with your host institution.
