What not to bring into Australia

Australia is geographically isolated, and is therefore free from many of the world’s agricultural diseases and insects. For this reason, there are strict quarantine regulations that prohibit travellers from bringing most plant or animal products – and unprocessed food products – into Australia.

Things that travellers cannot bring into Australia include:

  • Dairy products
  • Tealeaves
  • Wooden furniture that includes bark
  • Toys and ornaments that contain seeds, or pillows containing straw
  • Instant noodles that contain meat
  • Footwear or camping equipment that has become soiled overseas

If you are unsure of anything in your possession, you should declare it when you pass through customs. The customs officials will tell you if it is prohibited. If customs officials inspect your luggage and they find any prohibited material that you have not declared, they will confiscate it and they may issue you with a fine.

Visit the following page of the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service website to check what you cannot bring into Australia

There are also certain items that cannot be sent to Australia by mail. You should let your family and friends know what these are.
