STUDENT VISAS

To study in Australia as an international student you must have a valid Australian Student Visa. If you are offered a place at UNSW, details of how to apply for your Student Visa will be sent with your offer letter.

Students from a small number of countries may be able to transfer from a Visitor Visa to a 'Student Visa' within Australia. You should check with the Australian Embassy in your country to see if you are eligible.

UNDER 18 STUDENTS

Australian government regulations require students under the age of 18 years to have appropriate accommodation and welfare arrangements while studying in Australia.  When applying for your student visa you will need to provide Confirmation of Appropriate Accommodation and Welfare (CAAW).  If you plan to reside in Australia with a parent, custodian or relative aged over 21 years, you must arrange this yourself and have these arrangements approved directly with the Department of Immigration and Citizenship when applying for your student visa.  In every other case, UNSW Foundation Year on behalf of UNSW will approve the CAAW care arrangements for underage students as required by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship and the Australian government.  Students who require UNSW Foundation Year to provide this service must adhere to a number of conditions.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR VISA CONDITIONS

You are granted a Student Visa for the duration of your study program as specified in the eCoe (electronic Confirmation of Enrolment) issued by the University.

Important: Student visas are subject to strict conditions. Failure to comply with visa conditions may result in cancellation of your visa. Cancellation of your Student Visa will require you to leave Australia.

It is your responsibility to read and understand the conditions of your visa. For a list of explanations of your visa conditions, please refer to the information booklet under your visa subclass in the Department of Immigration and Citizenship website.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF I DO NOT COMPLY WITH THE VISA CONDITIONS?

You must comply with all of your visa conditions. Note: If you fail to comply with visa conditions 8202 and 8533, the University is obliged under the Education Services for Overseas Students Act 2000 (ESOS Act) to inform the Department of Immigration and Citizenship. A letter will be sent to you advising you that you must attend a specified DIMIA office within 28 days to resolve the matter. Failure to attend will result in your visa being cancelled and your removal from Australia unless the cancellation is revoked.

Reporting to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship office within the 28 day period will halt the visa cancellation process. A decision will then be made whether or not to cancel your visa. If the compliance failure is substantiated, migration law requires that the visa must be cancelled.
