Application Process

Application process: step-by-step

  1. Read the prospectus from cover to cover.  Please note that some of this information has since been updated.

  2. Attend an Exchange information session.  Information sessions  are held every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday during semester in the Global Student Resource Room, Level 2,East Wing of the Red Centre Building. Relevant application information and forms can also be collected at this time.  Please note that attendance to one of these sessions is essential to apply for exchange.

  3. Check on the exchange deadlines. These are available below or by contacting the International Exchange Program office.

  4. Start researching your exchange options.  Please note that students are required to have 6 university preferences as part of their application and need to be happy to go on exchange to any one of these  universities. You need to find sufficient courses for all 6 preferences.

  5. Book an appointment and talk to an exchange advisor to discuss your exchange options based on your research so far. Not all courses are available to exchange students so it is important that you speak to the relevant Exchange Adviser. Some partners also require evidence of English Language ability for non-native speakers of English.

  6. Talk to your faculty about going on exchange and seek approval for the courses you wish to take while on exchange. At this stage you only need to seek course approval for your first preference. If you are nominated to your second, third, fourth, fifth or sixth preference then you will need to repeat this process for the university you have been nominated to.

  7. After speaking to an Exchange Adviser regarding your exchange options, contact the Exchange Office to collect your application log on details allowing you to submit an online application.

  8. Pay the $200 application fee at the Cashier's Office using a payment form obtained from the Exchange Office. Keep the receipt to hand in when you lodge your application.

  9. Submit your online application by the deadline. Remember to print a copy of your application and sign the relevant sections.

  10. Make 2 photocopies of all supporting documentation. Keep one for yourself and submit the other copy with your original application to the Exchange Office.

  11. Lodge your completed application at the Exchange Office by the application deadline.  An advisor will check through your application and notify you if anything is missing or needs to be changed

  12. Please note that the final decision on whether students are accepted lies with the partner university and student still need to meet the admission standards of the partner university even if they have been nominated by the Exchange Office.

  13. It can take several months before we receive notification from the partner that students have been accepted. Students should not plan to travel too early prior to the start of their exchange.

NOTE: The Exchange Program is competitive and most students need at least a credit average to be considered for exchange to most universities. Students will less than a credit average MUST speak to an Exchange Adviser about their Exchange options before they lodge an application.

Information Sessions

Information sessions are held during session and include general information on the exchange program, application procedures as well as specific information on the focus areas for that week.  Coffee catch ups are held every Tuesday at 4:00pm in the Exchange Office for students to talk to exchange students from the focus region and/or UNSW students who have been on exchange.  This semester the Exchange Office is introducing an additional information session on Wednesdays at 1:00pm for students who are unable to attend the Tuesday or Thursday 3:00pm information session.  All Exchange Information sessions are held in the Ground Floor Meeting Room, East Wing, Red Centre Building.  For information session times see:

Aussie Mate programme

The program aims to assist in welcoming our new incoming exchange students to Australian life. We hope that it provides a chance for them to be introduced to some of Sydney's fun places, gain some basic local knowledge and introduce them to UNSW student life. We also hope that it may give outgoing exchange students or newly returned exchange students a chance to have some fun and make some connections before going overseas and to maintain them when they return. We hope that it makes the exchange experience more engaging for both incoming and outgoing students!  If you are interested in the Aussie Mate Programme please fill out the application form and return it by the deadline.

Chief Aussie Mate Program

The Exchange Office is running a volunteer program for students to get involved in the organising of the Aussie Mate program and promotional activities of the Exchange Office. This is a great way to network and meet other exchange and UNSW students and have a great time.  It is also a way for you to develop skills that are useful for getting a job and it looks impressive on a resume.  Volunteer experience shows employers that you have initiative, motivation and commitment. Volunteers will be asked to contribute approximately 20 hours of their time over a semester.  Student volunteers will be given a book voucher, certificate of participation and reference outlining the activities undertaken.  If you would like to get involved then please send your Aussie Mate application form, resume and a 200 word statement explaining why you would like to apply to intex@unsw.edu.au by the deadline.

BIS Students

Bachelor of International Studies (BIS), students are required to go on exchange for one full year as part of their degree program. BIS students must go on exchange to a partner university in the second session of their third year and the first session of their fourth year. As with all other students, BIS students must fulfil the fulltime requirements at the partner university. Additionally, all subjects must be approved by the student's stream coordinator, the Arts Faculty, language coordinator (where applicable) and by Professor Roger Bell, convenor of the program. No first year courses can be taken while on exchange.

The year abroad forms an integral part of the degree program and students must keep copies of academic work completed on exchange. When students return to UNSW their academic portfolios are assessed and a grade is awarded for each semester abroad. BIS students are subject to the same application and interview process as all other UNSW students applying for exchange. Enquiries about the BIS program should be directed to Ms Nikki Beaumont at bis@unsw.edu.au Enquiries about the year abroad should be directed to the relevant Exchange Advisor at the exchange office.
