Application for Student Visa with Permission to Work

To be eligible to make an application for permission to work, you must:
  • hold a valid student visa class 570-576 with visa condition 8101,
  • be in Australia,
  • have commenced a registered course at UNSW, and
  • have complied with the conditions of your existing visa.

Lodgement Options

You can either apply:
  1. Online using a credit card or BPay. This option take two workingdays to process. Please note that students with e-Visa can ONLY apply for work permission online.
    E-Visas are the types of visa that have no visa evidence label on passport.
  2. By Post. This option takes 30 days to process. You must send in a completed application along with payment in the form of money order payable to DIAC.

Lodgement Instructions

Applying online/through internet

To lodge online, you must have a credit card or use BPAY as payment method.
 
i. Submit a copy of your current Fee Statement to ISS Student Advisers on Ground Floor, Goodsell Building (F20) to inform them that you intend to lodge an online work visa application. ISS will confirm that you have commenced your studies.

Instructions to print out your fee statement:
  1. Login to myUNSW
  2. Then click on the "Fee Statement & Payment Options" link
  3. Click on your current semester
  4. On the fee statement page, make sure you click on the "Course Details"
  5. Print and then bring it to an ISS Adviser on Ground Floor, Goodsell Building (F20).
If you are an Exchange/Study Abroad/AGSM/UFS/UNSWIL student, please go to your respective student office.
 
ii. Once the Adviser has advise DIAC it usually takes 24 hours before you can apply online.
 
iii. Log on to DIAC's e-Visa page: www.immi.gov.au/e_visa/index.htm
 
iv. Choose 'Students', then "Permission to work"
 
v. Complete the online application form
 
vi. Payment will be made online (credit card or BPay). To have access to BPay, contact your Australian bank to setup telephone or internet banking before you apply.
 
vii. DIAC will send an email to you to confirm that your application is complete
 
viii. Once you have received advice that the application is complete, bring your passport to DIAC to have the new visa label attached
 
ix. At DIAC, please select the queue ticket category called "E-visa Evidencing". This is an express service to receive labels for visa applications that have been lodged online.

Applying By Post

i. Print out a copy of the application form (157P) from DIAC website (www.immi.gov.au)
 
ii. Submit a copy of current Fee Statement and the completed 157P form to ISS Student Advisers on Ground Floor, Goodsell Building (F20). Advisers will complete "Education Provider Details (Question 15)" section of the form and inform DIAC you have commenced your course.
 
iii. If you are a Foundation Studies, Exchange, Study Abroad, Institute of Language or AGSM student, please have your School or Student Adviser to complete "Education Provider Details" section of the form.
 
iv. If you are on Australian government scholarship (ADS and APS), please include your scholarships letter with your application. You are exempted from the application fee.
 
v. Obtain a money order for application fee of A$60 from any Post Office and make it payable to "DIAC"
 
vi.Send the completed form (157P) along with money order payment to:

vii. DIAC will send an email to you to confirm that your application is complete
 
viii. Once you have received advice that the application is complete, take your passport to DIAC to have new visa label attached.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will  I have permission to work?
The length of your visa will run for the same period as your original visa.  The condition will be carried forward to your next student visa when you extend the existing one.

Will I still have my Permission to Work visa if I extend my student visa in my home country?
You will lose your permission to work status on your student visa if you are intending to extend your student visa in your home country. You will need to re-apply for permission to work status if you are intending to work while you study.
 
When can I work full time and can I work full time during mid-semester break?
You cannot work full time during the semester break and you can only work full time during the semester break in condition you are not enrolled in either summer or winter session.
