PROGRAM COMPLETION AND GRADUATION

If at the end of your final session you have satisfied all of your program requirements (i.e. you have completed all assessments, industrial training, theses and projects prescribed for your program of study) you will be able to graduate at the next round of graduation ceremonies. You can check your graduation details and graduation status from myUNSW.

GRADUATION CEREMONIES

Graduation ceremonies will usually held in the following periods:
 
March/April/May All degrees and diplomas
 
June and July Overseas ceremonies
 
September and October All degrees and diplomas and Overseas ceremony
 
December Australian Defence Force Academy and Faculty of Medicine (undergraduate and research degrees)
 
Please check myUNSW for the exact dates and locations of overseas ceremonies
 
Information about arrangements for graduation ceremonies will be forwarded to graduands approximately four weeks before the date of the ceremony. The package of information will include tickets, information about hiring academic dress, etc. and also an application for graduation in absentia.

ATTENDANCE AT YOUR GRADUATION

A. If you plan to stay on in Australia to attend the graduation ceremony, you will need to do the following:
  • Request an Award Statement from UNSW Student Central. This will state the dates of completion of the program and the graduation ceremony that your degree will be conferred on. This is available for request after your results are released.
  • Obtain evidence, such a bank statement from your account, to demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to support yourself from the date that you cease your status as a student to the time that you depart.
  • Pay for private health insurance to cover this period as required by the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs (DIMIA). Overseas Student Health Cover is no longer valid once you have completed your studies.
  • Go to DIMIA with the above documents and your passport to request a change of status from student to visitor so that you can stay on to attend your graduation. Please note that once your status is changed to a visitor, you are NOT entitiled to work at all. The period of stay could be three months or less and you are expected to leave shortly after your graduation ceremony. For more details, contact DIMIA Office. (Phone 131881 or www.immi.gov.au)
 
B. If you intended to go home then return to attend the ceremony
  • Request for an Award Statement from UNSW Student Central after your results are released. This will state the dates of completion of the program and the graduation ceremony that your degree will be conferred on.
  • Apply for a visitor's visa from your home country. Include in your visa application your Award Statement.
 
C. If you do not intended to attend your graduation at all
  • Indicate on myUNSW that you will not be attending your graduation ceremony, or complete the Graduand Declaration form that will be sent to you in the graduation package. After the ceremony date your testamur and 2 copies of your academic transcipt will be posted to you. Testamurs are sent via courier to overseas addresses. Please note that the courier does not deliver to postal boxes, as consignments must be signed for on delivery.
 

HIRING AN ACADEMIC GOWN AND CONTACTS

Hiring an Academic Gown
 
You may consider hiring an academic gown to take pictures around the campus. You can contact the University Union on 9385 7787 or email academicdress@union.unsw.edu.au or visit the Graduation and Gift Shop in the lower ground floor of the Morven Brown building. There is a daily hire charge and refundable deposit.
