Services and Activities Provided
Transition and settling in assistance:
To be the first point of contacts for students
To provide comprehensive orientation programs for new UNSW international students to equip them with knowledge to utilise services on and off campus and study successfully at UNSW
ISS prepares students pre-arrival and on arrival to ensure a smooth transition to living in Sydney and studying at UNSW by:
  • Email sent to all new students after their acceptance to UNSW to establish contact with the incoming student.
  • Pre-departure information booklet and in-country briefings
  • Comprehensive on arrival orientation program
  • Airport Reception service to receive students and arranging temporary accommodation
  • Assistance to look for long term accommodation
  • Thrice-weekly orientation sessions
  • Orientation weekend camp
  • Peer Mentor program where senior international students offer advice and support to new students

Life cycle support:
To provide a range of programs and activities to meet the needs of students throughout their studies
ISS addresses the needs of international students throughout their stay at UNSW to ensure their adjustment and acculturation by: 
  • Making student advisors available to international students advisers for any issues of concern to their personal or academic well-being
  • Delivery of seminars and workshops on arrival
  • Ongoing support via the ISS e-newsletter and printed newsletter
  • Marketspace - online facility so students can sell, swap furniture, books etc.
  • Community involvement programs for students to know about Australian culture and its people
  • Trips and social activities
  • Returning home seminars and valedictory functions for graduands

Information and referral services:
To provide accurate and up to date information for current international students
ISS acts as the interface on behalf of international students by:
  • Liaising with UNSW student services, DIMIA and outside agencies to ensure accurate information is available to students on the ISS website or at ISS
  • Referrals to UNSW units and outside agencies
  • Information sent out to students via IS-Forum or newsletter

Advocacy for international student needs:
To represent international students' needs and concerns to UNSW Management or outside organisations, e.g. DIMIA, DEST, health insurance providers etc.
ISS represents the interests and concerns of international students with the University and outside organisation and trouble-shoots on their behalf:
  • Liaising with university units/ schools/ faculties regarding issues of concern to international students
  • Advocacy on behalf of students to outside organisations to obtain the best outcome.

Internationalisation of UNSW:
To increase cross-cultural understanding amongst UNSW students
To provide opportunities for international students to learn about Australian culture and broaden their experience
ISS facilitates an added value cultural experience for international students through:
  • Community Involvement program and coordinating volunteer opportunities for international students to learn about Australian culture and learn about other cultures amongst the international student community.
  • Peer mentor program to facilitate cross-cultural understanding amongst students
