Services and Activities Provided
 
Promotion of International Exchange:
To raise awareness among current and prospective students of the international education opportunities available at UNSW.
 
Through the International Exchange Program (IEP), local and international students are encouraged to expand their horizons and add an international dimension to their UNSW degree program by spending one or two semesters at our partner university on a credit transfer basis. IEP outreach includes:
  • Participation in INTEX/University wide events
  • Posters
  • Website
  • Information days
  • Country Specific Seminars
  • Orientation week activities
  • Exchange Expos

Facilitating Exchange:
To provide timely and accurate advice to prospective exchange students and partner institutions.
 
To enhance students' experiences while on exchange, IEP:
  • Matches student's academic and cultural interests with prospective partner institutions
  • Ascertains, with the help of faculty members, that students are suitably qualified for their nominated courses at UNSW.
  • Establishes transparent application and interview procedures
  • Assists students with travel arrangements as necessary
  • Provides a comprehensive pre-departure briefing including university procedures and safety (OHS/RISKMAN) requirements.
  • Provides ongoing support/advice as required.
  • Supports students and partner institutions throughout the exchange experience to monitor progress.
  • Coordinates the Aussie Mate program and the mandatory orientation program.

Internationalisation and Student Mobility:
To broaden the range of opportunities available to UNSW students to study internationally
Successfully support the internationalisation objectives defined by the UNSW Strategic Plan.
 
To facilitate UNSW's internationalisation objectives, International Relations engages the following strategies:
  • Recommendations to faculty where opportunities exist for internationalisation of UNSW programs.
  • Provides advice on the appropriateness of proposed partnerships through close collaboration with the relevant faculties to ensure that any international component meets the UNSW protocol.
  • Reports on the status/health of current institutional partnerships as required.
  • Development of policies and procedures to ensure the smooth running of inbound and outbound student exchange programs and the practicum program.
  • Development of strategies to action the decisions of the International Exchange Advisory Committee (sub-committee of the ISC).
  • Promotes student mobility programs across the university.

Building/Maintaining external linkages:
Through the approval process led by the International Exchange Advisory Committee to ensure that new relationships meet the university protocols and to ensure that existing agreements meet the needs of both parties.
 
To ensure the appropriateness of external relationships, International Relations:
  • Follows UNSW protocols, ensures that proposals for linkages meet the needs of both parties
  • Ascertains the strategic importance to UNSW of each relationship.
  • Monitors the continued appropriateness of the agreement.
  • Monitors faculty activity and/or student-staff mobility to ensure that students are appropriately advised.

Relationship with faculties:
To involve academic and administrative staff in specific aspects of the Exchange and Practicum programs in order that they better understand and take ownership of the program
Develop opportunities to interact with faculty members.
 
To ensure the continuing academic support for the exchange and practicum program, International Relations and Exchange:
  • Works closely with academic staff to ensure/facilitate the development of schools/faculty-based relationships
  • Involves academic staff/faculty members in INTEX procedures/activities to facilitate the academic side of exchange and to encourage academic involvement and support e.g. interviews in the program.

Visiting delegations:
Showcase UNSW to the international education community through managed visits that meet the needs of both parties.
 
International Relations liaises with the broader university community to facilitate productive visits from overseas universities and:
  • Liaises with faculties and senior academic staff to ascertain the importance and appropriateness of proposed visits.
  • Coordinates/organises visits to UNSW in accordance with the protocols for visiting delegations.
  • Ensures seamless university wide visits where visitor's needs are met in a timely and informative manner.
